The Polka Dot Princess: Yayoi Kusama

image via :artnet.com

One of my favorite Japanese artist is Yayoi Kusama. In her work she mixes her obsession with dots and her childhood daydreams to create manipulated and altered environments. I see her as an inspiration for many fashion designers today. When I saw all the polka dots and reptitive patterns that we have on the catwalk for the Spring 2010 shows, I couldn't help but think of Yayoi Kusama.

I had the opportunity to visit her exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea this summer. Unfortunately pictures weren't allowed in the galleries, but I did take some of famous the pumpkin pieces outside.

A fresh take on 60s sunglasses

I recently took a picture of this girl because I fell in love with her sunglasses, it's a modern take on the vintage 60s look with the hardware detail on the top. They're such a nice take from traditional sunglasses shapes. She told me that they're from Alexander Wang S/S 10 which isn't out yet, so she really wasn't suppose to be wearing them. When I went home I revisited the S/S 10 A.Wang pictures, and found these:

The Wild Things Are Here!!

A few weeks ago, I was going to write a post about the whole "Where the Wild Things Are" trend, but I thought maybe I should hold it off, because there seems to be and "overdose" of the fashion tie-ins in to the movie in NY.
Stores like Urban Outfitters and Opening Ceremony designated sections in their stores relating to the theme with items like fur vest, animal prints..etc. Then yesterday, I saw a pair of Mary Meyer for U.O leggings that were originally displayed by Wild Things area push onto the sales rack. It got me wondering if this was all just a fad and the trend has died down after a month.

But when I saw these pictures....It reminded me that I had forgotten that fur vests and animal prints are the hottest trends for fall! The movie just came out at a timely fashion!

New Wave in Tokyo: New Rave

"Neon Kei" (Neon style) is a fashion style that has been talked about since last year. There are several different versions of this fashion style. One of them is called, "New Rave Fashion, which is inspired by New Rave music. In Japan, its style is is more popular than its music. One of the main features of this style is to take loud colors like florencents and metallics and mix it with black or white.
It's always intriguing to see the various fashion tribes in Japan. Even within a single style such as the Neon style, there are different branches of tribes. I am interested in this particular one because I really like the idea of mixing bright and flamboyant colors with a darker colors like black.
